Overview
Weather-resistant steel plate, also known as weathering steel or Cor-Ten steel, is a high-strength steel that's resistant to atmospheric corrosion: 

 

 

How it works

Weather-resistant steel forms a protective layer of rust, called a patina, when exposed to the elements. This layer prevents the steel from corroding and can regenerate itself if the surface is damaged. 
 

Uses

Weather-resistant steel is often used in structural engineering, such as for bridges, containers, and sheet piling. It's also used in architectural applications, such as sculptures and building fascias.

Appearance

Weather-resistant steel has a brown-orange patina that develops over time. It doesn't need to be painted and requires minimal maintenance. 

 

 

Composition

Weather-resistant steel is made from low-carbon structural steel with alloying elements like copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. 

 

 

Grades

Different grades of weather-resistant steel have different strengths. For example, Corten A steel has more phosphorus and is often used in architectural structures, while Corten B steel is stronger and better for applications that require high impact resistance.
